Independent Custody Visiting Scheme

The Independent Custody Visiting Scheme is a voluntary scheme run by Strathclyde Police Authority to ensure the welfare of people detained in police stations is maintained.

Visitors call at police stations unannounced and look at a number of issues from the treatment of detainees to the effectiveness of the custody process.  Visitors report their findings to the Authority so any indications of problems can be explored and resolved.

Members of the public volunteer to become custody visitors and receive ongoing training and support.  Volunteers are not paid for their time however reasonable expenses associated with the role will be reimbursed.

Day-to-day management of the scheme is undertaken by a designated Scheme Administrator within the Police Authority. Members of Strathclyde Police Authority are responsible for maintaining a strategic overview of the work of Independent Custody Visitors.

Strathclyde's Independent Custody Visiting Scheme is part of a wider national scheme which is run by the Independent Custody Visiting Association. You can find out more about Custody Visiting and the Association's role by visiting www.icva.org.uk.
